Today is the historic May Day. It will be observed in Bangladesh along with the rest of the world with the pledge to establish the rights of workers. The day is a public holiday. President Md Abdul Hamid Advocate, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and leader of the opposition and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia have extended their sincere greetings to all working people of the world, including Bangladesh. In his message, the President put emphasis on taking various effective steps for improving relations between employees and employers, ensuring fair wage as well as creating safe and congenial working atmosphere.
He urged all authorities concerned to turn population into human force through creating employment, along with protecting rights and interest of working people.
In her message, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid her deep respect to the people who embraced martyrdom to establish fundamental rights of the working people in Chicago in 1886.
She said, greatest Bengali of all time Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had struggled his whole life for realising rights of the deprived and working class people of the country.
In a message, Khaleda Zia underscored the need to uphold the rights of labourers on the occasion.
“The workers are being deprived of their fundamental rights. It is a matter of concern. The May Day’s theme should be to protect the fundamental rights of the workers,” she added.
Tens of thousands of working people of the country, along with the rest of the world, will join street rallies and other activities to raise iron voice for ensuring their rights and safety, along with upholding the spirit of May Day.
Workers groups and trade unions, political parties, different government and socio-cultural organisations chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the day under the theme ‘Safe working-environment, Bangladesh to Advance’.
