The assistant general manager of Meghna Petroleum Limited, AKM Akhter Kamal Chowdhury, was closed to the Chittagong head office on Monday as demanded by four distribution organisations of petroleum products. As a result, Khulna divisional committee of the Bangladesh Petroleum Dealers, Distributors, Agents and Petrol Pump Owners’ Association called off their strike on the day after holding a meeting at its Khulna city office.
The association went on strike for an indefinite period from August 16 in demand of removal of AGM Akhter Kamal Chowdhury, bringing allegation of corruption against him.
As a result, extraction of oil and gas from depot of Meghna Petroleum Limited at Khalishpur of Khulna city remained suspended, causing immense sufferings to the people.
On Sunday night, the association held a meeting where they decided to boycott extraction of
petroleum products also from Padma and Jamuna depots of Khulna from Monday to press home its demand for removal of AGM Akhter Kamal Chowdhury of Meghna Petroleum Ltd.
‘We got a fax message at 11:30am today (Monday) from the Chittagong head office regarding withdrawal of AGM. So, the strike has been called off,’ said general secretary of the association Gazi Hafizur Rahman.
The AGM Akhter Kamal Chowdhury, while denying the allegation of corruption against him, admitted that he had received official letter closing him to the Chittagong head office.
