The Cabinet on Monday approved a new law titled “Oversees employment and Migrant Workers Act 2013” allowing seven years of jail and a fine of Tk one lakh for cheating and forging passport in the name of sending workers abroad. The approval was given in its regular meeting, held at the secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.After the meeting, additional secretary of Cabinet Division Murtaza Ahmed told reporters that the new law would replace the existing “Immigration Ordinance 1982” for recruiting agencies to check illegal practice to protect the rights of the overseas job seekers and expatriate Bangladeshis.
“The new law will also provide for upto five years of imprisonment and a fine of upto Tk one lakh for cheating and forgery while sending workers abroad,” he said.
The cabinet also approved the “Bangla Academy Act, 2013” with the provision of constitution of the Academy, appointment of president, executive committee and other officials, procedure of awarding fellowship and rules and guidelines of daily activities with other issues.
