Bangladesh’s Emdadul Haque Milon was unable to capitalise on a good start as he finished 61st among 64 archers in the men’s ranking round at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Friday.
Milon fired 57 points out of a possible 60 in the first of the 12 rounds that took him to ninth place, but his hopes for a top-10 finish quickly disappeared after he fared poorly in the next round.
He slipped to 49th place after the second round and could not recover as his first six rounds fetched him only 312 points. Milon had an improved performance in the next rounds, but still could score only 324 to finish with a total of 636, which he later said was way below his average performance.
‘I used to score above 340 at home,’ Milon said. ‘My performance dipped during the recent training in Thailand, but it was still close to 330-335.
‘In fact I was very nervous after my first shot. The weather was also not very good as you all have seen it was raining,’ said Milon.
Korean archer Im Dong-Hyun broke his own world record of 696, set in Antalya, Turkey, last year, when he scored 699. His team-mate Kim Bubmin also beat the old record with a score of 698.
Another Korean Oh Jin-Hyek came third with 690 and he collectively with Dong and Kim scored 2,087, which is another world record. The trio only broke their own record of 2,069.
There was no medal or elimination in the ranking round, but a good score could have seen Milon get an easy draw for the individual round which begins on July 30.
Milon will now face Britain’s Godfrey Larry who finished fourth with 680 points. The individual round will consist of five sets where the winner must take at least three sets.
Before Milon goes for the individual round, Bangladesh will get to know the fate of their two other athletes – shooter Sharmin Akhter Ratna and gymnast Syque Caesar – who will take to the field today.
Ratna, who has been training for the last two months in the UK, will compete in 10-metre air rifle event at the Royal Artillery Barracks, where she would compete along with 58 shooters.
While Ratna has her best score of only 394, the event features at least three shooters whose best scores are 400 out of 400 and many others in the range of 399.
Syque will compete in the men’s qualification round, which will be held at North Greenwich arena in the afternoon.
