Alexandria Mills, an 18-year-old American, was named Miss World 2010 after competing against 114 other young women for the title.
The Kentucky resident was crowned during a televised ceremony in Sanya, southern China, on October 30.
“It’s a cliché but this really is a dream come true,” she was quoted as saying on the Miss World web site. “I can’t believe it’s happening to me. My time has come. I’m loving it!”
The web site lists Mills’ interests as singing, travelling, photography, and playing the French horn and percussion.
It states her ambition is to become a teacher, but also quotes her as saying: “I intend to travel the world and pursue a career in landscape and architectural photography. Study at college for a degree in photography.”
The 60th Miss World says she is open-minded, outgoing and a vegetarian.
The judges for this year’s event included seven previous Miss Worlds.
Emma Wareus, of Botswana, was second, and Adriana Vasini, of Venezuela, placed third.
During their time together the contestants were able to visit sites such as the Great Wall of China, Genghis Khan’s mausoleum in Inner Mongolia, Beijing’s Olympic Stadium and the Shanghai EXPO.
This is the fifth time that Sanya has hosted the Miss World final.
Mr World 2010, Kamal Ibrahim, who is from Ireland, was chosen during a contest earlier this year.
