Home minister Dr Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir on Monday said the authorities will take action against Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia for instigating the Hefazat-e-Islam (HIB) activists who went on the rampage in and around Shapla Chattar at Motijheel while organising their rally. The minister stated that Jamaat-Shibir activists had joined the procession and rally of HIB on Sunday under the guise of Hefazat-e-Islam. He said they swooped down on the police, and vandalised and set public property ablaze.
“We are ready to take any kind of action against any person to ensure peace in the country. That is why we will not allow the Hafazat to hold any programme in future,” he said.
“At least nine people were ‘killed’ during Sunday’s incident in Motijheel. Of them, nine people died during Sunday’s midnight operations,” the home minister said.
Meanwhile, Advocate Shamsul Huq Tuku, state minister for home affairs, said the law enforcement agencies were handling the situation with patience.
The state minister added that the government will take action against those who had issued a call for aiding the Hefazat activists.
Dr Alamgir, too, said the law and order situation was under control.
The home minister also congratulated the law enforcement agencies for evicting the Hefazat activists from Motijheel on Sunday midnight.
