Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited finally savoured a victory in the Bangladesh Premier Football League after they overcame Chittagong Abahani 2-0 at Bangabandhu National Stadium on Saturday. Former national midfielder Towhidul Alam opened Mohammedan’s account while captain Zahid Hasan Ameli sealed the 2-0 margin in the second half. Both the goals were assisted by national winger Zahid Hossain, who proved once again that he is one of the best attacking players in the top flight.
After beating Team BJMC a fortnight ago, Mohammedan struggled in the last three matches before Saturday’s match as they went down to a defeat against archrival Abahani Limited before drawing against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited and Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra.
Mohammedan are now in fifth position in the standings with 10 points from seven matches while promoted side Chittagong Abahani remained at the bottom with two points from the same number of matches.
Mohammedan broke the deadlock in the 38th minute when Towhidul dribbled past a defender and entered the penalty area following a through pass from Zahid. Towhidul placed the ball in the back of the net past Abahani goalkeeper Nahid Uddin.
Ameli, meanwhile, made no mistake doubling Mohammedan’s lead a couple of minutes after the interval as he received a pin-point cross from Zahid from the right flank. Ameli headed the ball inside the net.
In the day’s other match, Feni Soccer Club and Uttar Baridhara played out a 1-1 draw.
Uttar Baridhara skipper Shahidul Islam Shopon gave his side the lead in the seventh minute with an angular shot from the edge of the box following a cutback from Nigerian midfielder Kosoko. Gambian defender Mathew Mendy though scored the equaliser in the 30th minute.
After both the sides’ seventh match, Uttar Baridhara stood on six points while Soccer Club have three points.
