Batsman Mominul Haque said on Wednesday that he is sad as Sri Lankan legendary batsman Kumar Sangakara announced his retirement from international cricket after the ongoing Test series against India.
Sangakara will retire from international cricket after the opening two Test matches against India that started at Galle on Wednesday.Mominul made his Test debut against Sangakkara’s Sri Lanka at Galle in 2013. The former Sri Lankan captain scored centuries in both innings in the match that left young Mominul awestruck.
‘I just cannot remove my eyes when he bats,’ Mominul told reporters in Mirpur. ‘His technique against spin and pace was amazing. He used to bat for a long day barely making any mistake. Naturally there are lot of things to learn from him,’ said Mominul.
Mominul said he did not have an opportunity to speak to fellow left-hander Sangakkara but felt it is unnecessary as the Sri Lankan often let his bat do all the talking.
‘Actually I hadn’t spoken with him but that hardly matters as you can learn a lot just by watching him,’ said Mominul. ‘His mental strength was amazing and his ability to adapt with situations was awesome,’ said Mominul.
‘ In my debut match, he was batting with the lower order and at one point the way he got accustomed with the situation that was a learning experience for me.
‘It showed that if you possess mental strength then it is possible to play at any situation,’ Mominul said of Sangakkara, the leading run scorer among the current Test players with 38 centuries.
Mominul said he is also sad to see Australian captain Michael Clarke quitting the game at the end of ongoing Ashes against England.
‘I have not had a chance to play against him, but I am sad to see him retiring as one of his fans. He is one of my most favourite batsmen,’ said Mominul.
