A long queue was created in front of the Railway Officers’ Mess building in Shiroil area of Rajshahi city on Saturday as people found some currency notes floating in the water of a drain.
Local people said that they collected notes of Tk 1000, Tk 500, Tk 100, Tk 20 and also coin of Tk five in the drain. Rickshaw puller Alamgir Hossain claimed that he collected a lot of money, including a note of Tk 1000.
He said that currency notes were slipping out of some papers and files floating in the water. The papers were from the Rajshahi Road Transport Group office.
‘I have collected a 1000 taka note, some 500 taka notes from the drain’, said local resident Tinku.
Nibaran Chandra Barman, officer-in-charge of Boalia police station, told New Age that the papers were thrown into drain by the Rajshahi Road Transport Group office.
Rajshahi district road transport group general secretary Matiul Huque Tito said the incident left them in an embarrassing situation.
‘I didn’t think there could be money inside the old paper,’ he told New Age.
‘Those papers were in our office for many years. All of them appeared so bad in shape that we thought it’s better to dump them than burn. So we dumped them in the drain’, he added.
He said that he also went to the place after hearing the news but insisted that there could be ‘not more than two or three thousand taka.’
