Speakers at a sensitisation workshop underscored the necessity of monitoring the prisoners and take steps to prevent spread of HIV in the prisons.
The Khulna Mukti Sheba Sangstha, a social development organisation, organised the workshop on Thursday at a Khulna city hotel. The Khulna BNP unit president, Nazrul Islam Manju, also the lawmaker of Khulna 2 constituency, attended the workshop as chief guest.
Khulna Mukti Sheba Sangstha president Mostafa Kamal presided over the workshop where Khulna jail superintendent Md Nurun Nabi Bhuiya was present as special guest.
Nazrul Islam Manju said the existing scenario of Khulna jail was better than before as the authorities were determined to prevent HIV.
An upgraded monitoring system was introduced in the jail and so, no HIV carrier was detected in the last four years, he added.
The lawmaker emphasised launching social movements against drug addiction and other illegal acts to save the next generation from moral, physical and social deterioration.
The jail super assured that the authorities would take all the necessary steps to prevent HIV in Khulna jail.
The narcotics department deputy director, Md Rafiqul Islam, focused on the importance of preventing the drug addiction as the number of the drug addicts was rising alarmingly.
The workshop was addressed, among others, by KMSS executive director Afroza Akhter Manju, Khulna general hospital medical officer Md Atiar Rahman Sheikh and journalist Didarul Alam.
