The longest total lunar eclipse of the decade took place last night. It was the first of two total lunar eclipses of the year. The next one will occur on December 10, 2011.
This was a relatively rare central lunar eclipse where the centre point of the earth’s shadow passed across the moon. The last time a lunar eclipse was closer to the centre of the earth’s shadow was on July 16, 2000. The next such total lunar eclipse will be on July 27, 2018.
Starting from around 11:24 last night the eclipse lasted till 5:07am today. The earth’s shadow was forecasted to engulf the moon around 2:12am today and last about 100 minutes. The total lunar eclipse was visible from many countries.
Enthusiasts of all walk of life gathered by hundreds at different places of the city to witness the magnificent phenomenon. Many, however, had to return home early due to rain and cloudy sky.
