A woman and her daughter were stabbed to death at their residence in Noakhali town yesterday.
Police suspect a monetary dispute to be the motive behind the double murder.
The victims were Nur Nahar Begum, 40, wife of Fazle Azim, and her daughter Fatema Azim Priyonti, 17, who sat for this year’s SSC exams.
The incident took place around 10:30am at Guptanko Barlington area.
Police arrested Altaf Hossain, 28, after locals handed him over to them. He was an expatriate working in Oman who returned home a week ago.
During primary interrogation, Altaf admitted to committing the double murder and a case was filed against him.
Altaf told police that he and Nur Nahar got acquainted over the phone, which later turned into an affair.
He also said that Nur Nahar told him to return to Bangladesh and that she would give him Tk 2.5 lakh for running a business here, said Md Shahidul Islam, superintendent of Noakhali police, at a press briefing yesterday evening.
Altaf returned a week ago and since then he has been demanding money from Nur Nahar, but she was avoiding him, said the SP.
Around 10:00am yesterday, when Altaf showed up at Nur Nahar’s house, she told him to leave.
Enraged, Altaf, who was carrying a knife, stabbed Nur Nahar multiple times. He also stabbed Priyonti, who came to save her mother.
He then tried to flee, but locals caught him.
Talking to The Daily Star, Nur Nahar’s husband Fazle Azim said Altaf visited their house the day before the incident saying that he wanted to rent a flat on the ground floor. He was supposed to come to the house to pay the advance.
Azim, along with his wife, daughter, and son, lives on the first floor of their two-storey building. Their tenants stay on the ground floor.
Azim works at a hospital in the town and like every other day, he went out for work around 9:00am and his ninth-grader son went to school around the same time. Nur Nahar and Priyonti were the only ones at home.
“Around 10:30am, I was informed that there was an incident at my house. So, I rushed home and found my wife’s body in our bedroom. My tenants and relatives told me that my daughter also suffered stab injuries and was taken to a hospital. A few moments later, I came to know that my daughter also died,” said Azim.
Azim’s brother Zaker Hossain, who lives close by, said he rushed to his brother’s house after he was informed of the incident.
“I found my sister-in-law dead and my niece severely injured. I took her to a hospital where on-duty doctors declared her dead.”
Two local traders, Amin and Ripon, said they heard screams from inside the two-storey building around 10:30am.
“When we went there, we saw a man trying to flee the scene. There were blood stains on his clothes. So, we, along with other locals, chased and caught him. Then, we handed over him to the police,” said Ripon.
Meanwhile, students from different schools demonstrated across the town, demanding the killer’s punishment.
