A man and his elderly mother were murdered at their home in Uttar Dehegati Christian Para under Dehergati union of Barisal. Police recovered the bodies of Sushil Mridha, 44, and his mother Monika Mridha, 65, from their residence in Degerhati at around 10:30am yesterday. Shah Alam, the Babuganj police station in charge, said the bodies were sent to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy.
Police and local sources said victims Sushil and Monika were last seen alive at around 9:00pm on Sunday when they watched television before going to sleep.
According to neighbour Shanto Shikder, an NGO worker, Halima Begum, went to the victims’ house yesterday morning to collect loan installments but found the home locked from the outside. She also noticed bad smell coming from the inside. Calls made to their mobile phones were also not picked up. After being informed by locals, police came and broke the door to find the dead bodies.
According to police, Sushil bore marks of sharp weapon injuries on the neck and head while his mother’s face appeared to be smashed with an object. Police sources assumed that the murders were committed at least 30-35 hours before the recovery of the bodies.
Samiron Mridha, a mentally imbalanced son of victim Monika Mridha, was primarily suspected for the murders. Samiron remains missing since Friday night. Ajit Sikdar, the president of the local Christian community said the victims offered prayers on Sunday for Samiron to be cured, but only a few hours later the murders took place.
After visiting the spot, Barisal Police Superintendent AKM Ehsan Ullah said family feud is suspected behind the murders. He also said that the suspect, Samiron, is known to locals as a drug addict and mentally imbalanced.
