A man died two and a half hours after he was picked up by police from Shahjahanpur area Wednesday night. Police claimed that Saiful Islam Mithu, 38, a resident of Gulbagh in Malibagh area, was a drug addict. Mithu and two others were detained from Titipara area around 10:00am Wednesday when they failed to produce documents for the motorbike they were riding, said Mohammad Ziauzzaman, officer-in-charge of Shahjahanpur Police Station.
Identifying all the three as addicts, the police officer said they were riding the motorbike without helmets and also failed to show any documents.
While being in the lockup, Mithu complained of chest pain.
Police rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 12:30am, Ziauzzaman, added.
The other detainees, Rafiquzzaman, 35, and Babu, 35, were produced before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka.
