Businessmen at the RDA Market in Rajshahi city staged a demonstration on Monday, demanding withdrawal of the decision to build a multi-storied building in the market.
The agitating businessmen brought out a procession in the city to press for their demand. The procession was followed by a rally in front of the RDA market.
The speakers at the rally said the Rajshahi Development Authority had recently invited tender for construction of a multi-storey building at the south portion of the market.
‘If the south portion is demolished for building a highrise, at least 250 shop owners will be affected’, they said.
Earlier, the businessmen requested RDA chairman not to build multi-storey building but he did not pay heed to the plea, the speakers said.
‘We are suffering for corruption of the RDA chairman’, said Khandaker Shamsul Haque, president of RDA market businessmen association. The businessmen also threatened to go for tougher movement if the decision to build the building is not withdrawn.
The general secretary of the association, Farid Mahmud Hasan and vice-president Sirajul Islam, among others, spoke at the rally.
