MPO of 300 teachers cancelled
The Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education on Tuesday cancelled the monthly pay of order of 273 non-government teachers after corruption had been
spotted in the enlistment process, officials told New Age Tuesday.
Officials said that all these teachers with the connivance of some officers and employees at the DSHE managed to get the MPO enlistment from June although no applications in this regard had been submitted to the district education officers and no approval had been given by the MPO committee.
The DSHE director (college and administration), Ataur Rahman, said that the
MPO of 273 teachers of 15 districts had been cancelled.
‘All these teachers were given MPO in June. The headmasters concerned have been asked to collect the money from the teachers and refund it to the DSHE,’ Ataur said. ‘An investigation committee, set up early this month, is working and culprits will be brought to justice in keeping with the recommendations the committee will make.’
Most of the educational institutions in Bangladesh are set up on private initiatives and they later start getting government financial benefits on meeting certain conditions from the exchequer in the form of monthly pay order.
For the MPO enlistment, district education officers receive applications with necessary papers from school authorities and after a preliminary scrutiny, the papers are forwarded to the DSHE, according to rules set by the government.
A committee, led by the director general of the secondary and higher education directorate, is entrusted to give the final approval for the MPO enlistment.
But the DSHE officials found that all the 273 teachers managed to get the MPO without submitting applications to the district education officers and without having the approval of the MPO committee.
Anima Saha of AK Higher School at Demra in Dhaka who had managed her MPO by giving Tk 2.5 lakh in bribe to an official of the DSHE told New Age that the cancellation of the MPO would add to her woes only.
Similarly, Ratna Khatun of Natima Kujhipole Adarsha High School at Maheshpur under Jhenaidah, Tauhida Khatun of Gautampara Patura Bangabandhu Junior School in Brahamanbaria and Latifa Hena of Muktal Hossain High School of Netrakona managed to get MPO in exchange for bribe but the MPOs was cancelled Tuesday.
Six teachers of Bhola whose MPO was cancelled are Hiranmoy Halder of Panchapalli Secondary School of Tajumaddin, Popi Rani Dutt of Ganda Girls’ Secondary School and Md Shafiqul Islam of Dewla Talukdarbari High School of Borhanuddin, Sharfuddin of Andirpar High School of Manpura and Md Abu Noman of Karimganj High School and Mehrun Nesa of Dakkhin Lalmohan High School at Lalmohan.
The other teachers whose MPO has been cancelled belong to Dhaka, Jessore, Faridpur, Barisal, Khulna, Jamalpur, Netrakona, Rangpur, Pabna, Jhenaidah, Maulavibazar and Habiganj.
Nearly 4.7 lakh teachers and employees of more than 27,000 secondary schools, madrassahs and colleges get MPO facilities. The government needs to spend about Tk 5,000 crore a year on the monthly pay order.
