Local giant Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited sealed their semi-final place as the first team from Group B after pipping Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club 1-0 in the
Super Cup at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Monday.
Wahed Ahmed bagged the all-important goal for the Black-and-White outfit that secured his team’s passage to the last four.
With two clear victories, Mohammedan lead the points table with six points while Brothers Union are in the second place with four points, both teams having played two matches.
After the defeat, Jamal’s hope of qualifying for the semi-final was all but over as they have only a solitary point in their account while BJMC became the fourth team to be ruled out of the tournament with two consecutive defeats.
Mohammedan will take on Brothers in their last group match on Wednesday while Jamal will clash with BJMC on the same day.
Wahed put Mohammedan ahead in the eight minute with a solo effort. He went past a weak Jamal back-line before thumping his shot to the back of the net.
After conceding the goal, Jamal attacked desperately in search of an equaliser and they came quite close in the 13th minute when Jamal’s Shakil Ahmed fired a powerful shot towards Mohammedan goalie Mamun Khan.
Mamun saved Shakil’s ensuing effort which was followed by another amazing save from a rebound shot taken by Alamgir Kabir Rana.
Wahed missed another golden chance to put the scoreline double doubt in the 38th minute when he received a long pass from Yasin but failed as he chipped it over Jamal goalkeeper Sultan Ahmed Shakil.
In the 57th minute Mohammedan’s Sohel Rana saw his strike from the edge of the box deflected off a defender before it went to the hands of the Jamal goalie.
Luck did not favour Jamal in the 69th minute when substitute striker Masud Rana’s powerful header from a Sabuj cross from the right flank rebounded off the crossbar.
