The long wait for Dhaka Premier League player transfers will come to an end today when the Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis will complete the process in a new but complicated system at a city hotel. The so-called players-by-choice transfer will begin at 3:00pm in the Marble Room of Ruposhi Bangla Hotel with 12 clubs picking their men from different categories through lottery.
It is the first of its kind which has been introduced to rein in players’ exorbitant demand, giving certain advantage to the clubs, who will now have the chance to pick the players from seven categories at their choice.
The event will take place in 16 rounds with clubs, picked through a lottery, calling for their desired player in each round. Defending champions Victoria Sporting Club will have the first opportunity to pick their pecking order in each round followed by runners up Prime Bank.
The process will start with A+ category where there are four players who have to be paid Tk 22 lakh each. There are 132 other cricketers in five other categories – A, B+, B, C and D – who all will be picked by clubs gradually.
‘All the players from Group A to D categories will have the chance to play in the league as each team will have to take 11 players from these categories,’ said Mahbub Anam, a BCB member who was appointed as commissioner of the transfers.
There will be no hard and fast rule about picking players from a single category after the players in A+ category is completed that consists of all-rounder Sakib al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim and Nasir Hossain.
‘It will give the clubs a better opportunity to prepare their teams if they can select their players from different categories. Even if they lose an opener they can always substitute them with others,’ he added.
The CCDM bracketed 12 cricketers in A category who will receive Tk 15 lakh each for their services in the league. A total of 24 players are in B+ category, that will cost the clubs 10 lakh for each player. The 36 cricketers of B category will cost Tk 8 lakh each while 24 C category players were each given a price tag of Tk 5 lakh. The BCB listed 36 players in D category for Tk 2.5 lakh each.
After the lottery for D category players, the club will have the opportunity to take four players from E category, who will each receive only Tk 1 lakh if selected.
There is no obligation for the clubs to select more than one player from E category. Each team can register.
