Two students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology died after people said to be muggers had attacked their boat in a lake in Sylhet on Friday evening. The police on Saturday morning found the two dead in the river Chengerkhal.
The deceased were Khairul Kabir and Dipankar Ghosh Anik, second-year students of chemical engineering and polymer science at the university.
Several thousands students of the university, meanwhile on Saturday, blocked the Sylhet–Sunamganj Highway demanding immediate arrest of people responsible for drowning the two students to death in the river on Friday night.
The university also forced the authorities to suspend academic and administrative activities in the university by going on demonstrations.
The Jalalabad police said that Khairul and Anik, along with five of their friends, including three girls, went boating in the river Surma on Friday evening.
When they reached Chamaura, a group of people reported to be muggers, coming in another boat, attacked them to take away the girls and their valuables, triggering a clash.
At one point, Khairul and Anik fell into the river and went missing.
The police detained four people, including the boatman, for interrogation.
Soon after the bodies had been found, the students took to the streets and vandalised some shops on the campus.
Traffic on Sylhet–Sunamganj Highway remained suspended for six hours, causing sufferings to the people.
The university authorities set up a three-member committee, led by the computer science and engineering department chairman, Muhammad Jafar Iqbal, to investigate the incident.
