Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid, secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, moved appeal petition against the verdict of International crimes Tribunal (ICT) with the appellate division of Supreme Court on Sunday. Advocate on Record Joynul Abedin put forward the petition on behalf of Mujahid, defence counsel Advocate Tajul Islam said. Defence filed the appeal on 115 grounds and enclosed 3,800-page documents with the petition, he said.
ICT-2, headed by Justice Obaidul Hassan, awarded death penalty to Mujahid on July 17 for his involvement in the crimes against humanity during the liberation war.
Out of seven charges, Mojahid was found guilty in five charges, while the other two allegations were not proved.
He was given capital punishment for three charges — the murder of eminent journalist Sirajuddin Hossain, the killing of intellectuals and a group of Hindu civilians in Faridpur in 1971.
He received five years and life imprisonment in the other two charges.
Mujahid appeared aggrieved after the verdict and termed the decision 100 per cent injustice.
He said he was not in Faridpur during the nine months of liberation war and he was punished simply for his involvement in Islamic politics.
