Mukti-joddha Sangsad KC edged Sheikh Russell KC 2-1 in their last group B match of the Super Cup on Thursday not only to confirm their semi-final berth but also to help Mohammedan Sporting Club get a place in the final four.
Sheikh Russell’s Nigerian winger Effiong Duke put his team in front in the 33rd minute while Mithun Chowdhury and Almau Bukola netted one apiece for Muktijoddha in the first-half’s injury time and in the 67th minute respectively to ensure full three points for the all reds from the match held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
Muktijoddha, who won group B with four points in total, will face group A runners- up Abahani Limited in the semi-final while Mohammedan will take on group A champions Sheikh Jamal as they came second in their group earning two points from two draws.
Muktijoddha coach Maruful Haque was also happy with result but he was also a bit anxious about the outcome of the match as he did not want to face Abahani in the semis.
‘I wanted to face Sheikh Jamal in the semi-final because they have some technical faults in their playing style and I have detected some of those,’ said Maruf.
The Bangladesh Football Federation has postponed the Super Cup semi-finals until after Bangladesh’s World Cup pre-qualifiers against Lebanon.
