The Chittagong phase and the third round of the Bangladesh Premier League came to an end on Wednesday with Muktijoddha Sangshad Krira Chakra and Arambagh Krira Sangha both winning their respective matches at the MA Aziz Stadium. In the first match of the day, Federation Cup finalists Arambagh came from behind to beat Uttar Baridhara 2-1while Muktijoddha registered a 2-0 win over Brothers Union to share the top spot of the points table with Abahani Limited and Chittagong Abahani with seven points.
Brothers forward Mannaf Rubby wasted a great chance in the 36th minute. Mohammad Rony darted into the right corner of the box before providing a net square pass but Rubby was late to connect the ball from the six-yard box.
Habibur Rahman Shohag broke the deadlock in the 65th minute with a dazzling free-kick. After earning a set-piece just outside the box, Shoahg’s curling left-footed free-kick found the back of the net.
Ahmed Kolo Musa doubled the lead and sealed the victory for Muktijoddha in the 84th minute by heading home following a Sohel Rana cross from the right flank.
Meanwhile, Nigerian forward Kester Akon was the hero for Arambagh by scoring a brace after Sentu Chandra Sen put Baridhara ahead in the 19th minute.
With the win, Arambagh moved into the sixth place of the points table with four points while Baridhara remained on seventh position with three points from the same number of outings.
Arambagh held defending champions Sheikh Jamal DC to a 1-1 draw in their first game on the league before suffering a huge 0-3 defeat against Muktijoddha in the second match.
On the other hand, this was Baridhara’s second successive loss in the league after they began their campaign with a stunning win over last edition’s runners-up Sheikh Russell KC.
Despite equally dominating the game, Baridhara went ahead in the 19th minute when Sentu Chandra headed home following a lob from Monit Alam from the right flank.
The lead, however, sustained only six minutes as Kester Akon showed his efficiency from dead balls by scoring from a curving free-kick from just outside the box.
Arambagh dominated most of the second half and pressed hard for the winner, which paved off in the 81th minute.
This time Kester’s left footed drive from the edge of the box went straight into the net.
