Mohammedan Sporting Club confirmed their Super League berth as the fifth team in Dhaka Premier League when they beat Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by six wickets at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Wednesday. Bangladesh Test team skipper Mushfiqur Rahim remained unbeaten on 66 to help Mohammedan reach 188-4 in 32.2 overs after Jamal made 187-8 in 42-over-a-side match which was delayed by two hours due to wet outfield.
With the win Mohammedan not only qualified for the Super League but also occupied
the top place in the league with 14 points from 11 games although Victoria Sporting Club and Legends of Rupganj, both with 13 points from 10 matches, have the chance to surpass them.
Meanwhile, the loss meant Jamal failed to qualify for the Super League and ended their campaign with 10 points from 11 matches.
Brothers Union, who have eight points and a game in hand, cannot sur pass them as the Dhanmondi-based club beat Brothers in their match.
Mushfiq struck seven fours and two sixes in his 82-ball innings and en route to his fifth 50-plus innings in the league he became the second Bangladeshi to reach 6,000 runs in List ‘A’ career when he was on 18.
Mushfiq added 73 runs in the third wicket stand with Naeem Islam, who scored an uncharacteristic quick half-century, 51 runs off 52 balls.
Mushfiq was part of another sizable 70-run partnership) in the fourth wicket with Indian all-rounder Bipul Sharma, who made 34 to steer his side home.
Mushfiq’s counterpart and national team colleague Mahmudullah got 3-52.
Bipul, who was adjudged the man of the match, was the chief destroyer in the Jamal Innings as he grabbed 4-24 with his left-arm spin.
As many as six batsmen in the Jamal’s innings reached 25-run mark but none could even make 30 that saw the side ending with an under-par score.
Mahbubul Karim was the highest scorer among the lot with his 29-run innings.
Nazmul Hossain, Subhasish Roy, Habibur Rahman and Naeem Islam jnr grabbed one wicket apiece for Mohammedan.
