A section of citizens in Sylhet have formed a 501-member Nagarik Committee and declared the outgoing Sylhet city mayor, Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran, s their candidate for mayoral race in the upcoming elections to the city corporation scheduled for June 15.
The announcement came at a meeting at a community centre in Sylhet on Friday night.
The 501-member committee was formed with businessman Rahmatullah Zahangir as its convener and a senior physician MA Ahbab as member-secretary, the meeting sources said.
Chaired by district Awami League president Abduz Zahir Sufian, the meeting was addressed, among others, by central Awami League organising secretary Misbah Uddin Siraj, lawmaker Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury and Syeda Jebunnessa Haque, the district bar association general secretary Humayun Kabir Babul, Bangladesh Medical Association local unit general secretary Murshed Ahmed Chowdhury, Sylhet Sammilita Natya Parisad secretary Rajat Kanti Gupta, district Muktizoddha Sangsad commander Shamsuddoha and district sports association secretary Ferdaus Chowdhury Ruhel.
The divisional election commissioner Ezharul Haque, also the returning officer of the third elections to the city corporation, said that Badar Uddin Ahmad Kamran, also the city Awami League president, on Thursday resigned as the city mayor for contesting the polls.
Eight mayoral candidates — one from the Awami League and four from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party — have collected nomination papers.
