BRAC University recently hosted an inspirational talk by veteran astronaut Joseph M Acaba, chief of NASA’s Astronaut Office, at its Merul Badda campus on December 15.
A decorated veteran of multiple spaceflights, former U.S. Marine, and former educator, this California native has logged 306 days in space on three missions and conducted two spacewalks.
The event, titled “From Earth to Orbit: An Astronaut’s Tale, ” enabled students and faculty members to engage with this real-life space explorer and gain valuable insights into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) missions. Acaba spoke on his journey, life aboard the International Space Station, the wonders and science behind space exploration, and the importance of STEM education.
Professor Mahbubul Alam Majumdar, Dean of the School of Data and Sciences at BRAC University, delivered the welcome speech at the event. Scott E. Hartmann, Director for Public Engagement at the U.S. Embassy Dhaka, also spoke at the event.
Acaba advised the students to prioritise their education, calling it the key to success for anyone aspiring to become an astronaut. He encouraged those interested in space exploration to visit NASA’s website, where numerous opportunities and pathways are available.
He also urged the students to avoid making mistakes, which are valuable learning experiences. Acaba shared stories of his life choices and challenges, illustrating how they enabled him to achieve his dream of becoming an astronaut.
NASA’s Chief Astronaut called for making our beautiful Earth even more liveable. He said, “Our Earth is wonderful. In space, a single wrong step can lead to death. Therefore, we need to be more careful about preserving this planet.”
He reflected on NASA’s vision, “NASA’s perspective is that we want to explore beyond what we’ve discovered so far. If we want to go far, we need to go together. If we want to go together, we must embrace collaboration with other countries.”
With a broad smile, he remarked, “I hope that next time, someone from this audience will be selected for NASA’s Artemis squad.”
Mr Acaba generously answered students’ questions and offered valuable insights. Mr Khairul Basher, Director of Communications at BRAC University, expertly facilitated the session and moderated the program.
In his closing remarks, BRACU Vice-Chancellor Professor Syed Ferhat Anwar encouraged the students and expressed his hope that one day their names would be on the list of astronauts.
