Awami League presidium member Mohammad Nasim on Friday urged Prof (Dr) Muhammad Yunus not to make unsolicited political statements on the issue of the caretaker government system. “Don’t stir up any controversy by making unwanted statements on the caretaker government issue. We respect you as a Nobel laureate. But you are demeaning yourself by making unsolicited political remarks. Please don’t tarnish your image and involve yourself in a controversy,” he said. Nasim, also a former home minister, was speaking at a meeting, organised by Bangladesh Awami Sangkritik Jote, at the public library in the city, with its president Mosharraf Hossain in the chair. “You are a respected person of the country. But you never visited Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s grave at Tungipara. You don’t go to the National Mausoleum on December 16. You don’t even talk about the trial of war criminals. Now, who prompted you to deliver unsolicited political speeches?” he said, questioning the motive of Dr Yunus.
Lashing out at Dr Yunus, Nasim said, “We never saw you when the country went through lean patches. So, don’t speak about the politics of the country.”
On the next general election, Nasim said, “The next parliamentary poll would be held as per the system of other democratic countries in the world. People want to see the election to be held as per the Constitution. But, due to unnecessary statements given by some persons, there may be some kind of misunderstanding among the countrymen.”
“We would not hold the election according to the dictate of some local or foreign persons. The poll would be held in accordance with the Constitution. The BNP can place any suggestion regarding the election-time interim govt. There is still scope for it,” he added. “The govt is making every effort to save the Grameen Bank as it respects Dr Yunus. The govt has also issued mobile phone licences, honouring Dr Yunus. We don’t have any intention to disrespect you,” Nasim said.
