Calling upon opposition to join the upcoming parliament session shunning movement on the streets, Awami League (AL) presidium member Mohammad Nasim on Tuesday alleged that BNP called hartal today to create anarchy in the country. At the same time, he urged the opposition to call off Wednesday’s hartal for the sake of the country and its people. “I am requesting you to please call off Wednesday’s hartal, otherwise, people of the country will resist your illogical shutdown.”
Nasim, also the spokesperson of AL led 14 party alliance, was addressing an impromptu news conference at his residence at Dhanmondi in the city.
Echoing Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the former home minister said the opposition should place its proposal on holding the next general elections before the parliament taking part in the upcoming budget session scheduled to begin June 3, instead of calling hartal.
“If the opposition has anything to say, it can place it before the parliament but please do not call hartal anymore as the country’s people don’t like such programme,” he said.
The Awami League leader also criticised the opposition leader Khaleda for calling hartal during the period of an US envoy visit to Bangladesh which is very unfortunate.
BNP had also dishonored Indian president Pranab Mukharjee by calling hartal during his visit to Bangladesh, the AL leader recalled. “What kind of politics is it?” he questioned.
The AL leader also called upon the countrymen to resist the opposition’s Wednesday’s illogical hartal by keeping shops open during the hartal hours.
Referring to the local government elections, Mohamamd Nasim said steps will be taken against those who will violate the party decision as per the party constitution.
