Abahani Limited cricketer Nasir Hossain was involved in an ugly episode in the Dhaka Premier League on Tuesday when he ran towards Dholeshwar batsman Asif Ahmed during their match at the Sher-er-Bangla Stadium. The incident happened during the 28th over of Prime Doleshwar’s innings when Asif complained of Nasir’s illegal movement in the field and refused to face the ball on few occasions.
Nasir ordered Asif to take guard and face the ball instead of complaining which triggered a verbal tirade that nearly turned out to be a physical battle.
As the altercation was heading towards getting physical, the umpires had intervened to keep the players away from each other.
The furious reaction of Nasir to Asif’s complaint drew some immediate impact among the supporters in the gallery as they began to get involved in loud outburst, keeping the game stalled for quite some time.
The incident happened as Nasir started to move sideward instead of going forward to disrupt the concentration of Asif, who was playing a crucial inning in their chase of 202 runs.
Asif made 22 runs and more importantly provided a valuable support to Dawid Malan, who played an unbeaten innings of 87 runs to give Doleshwar to a five-wicket win.
‘Nasir Bhai asked me to start the game without making anymore excuses despite violating the law,’ Asif told New Age.
‘I just could not understand why he turned violent after I refused to obey his order.
Nasir could not be reached for comments. Surprisingly, the match referee did not take any action against Nasir and Asif for the incident as both players admitted their guilt.
Match referee [Obaydul Huque] strongly reprimanded them but did not impose any fine for this particular incident, said a BCB official.
Asif was handed a fine of Tk 10,000 but that for his dissent after being given out.
