Although the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) announced a court adjourned verdict (CAV) after the proceedings of the trial against Prof. Ghulam Azam over two months ago, it remains uncertain when the much-awaited verdict will be delivered. The announcement of a CAV means the tribunal can announce the date of the judgement any time. However, in the other cases, the tribunals did not take more than a month to deliver the verdict after the announcement of a CAV. The ICT-2 announced a CAV in the case of Kamaruzzaman on April 16, the day before the announcement of a CAV against Azam, and passed its verdict on May 9. It also announced a CAV in the case of Abul Kalam Azam (aka “Bachchu Razakar”) on December 26 last year and the judgement was delivered on January 21. A CAV was declared against Abdul Quader Molla by the same tribunal on January 17 and the court delivered its final verdict on February 5. The ICT-1 passed a CAV after conclusion of arguments against Delwar Hossain Sayedee on January 29 and pronounced the verdict on February 28.
Regarding protraction in the case of Azam, prosecutor Advocate Sultan Mahmud Simon said on Saturday that the tribunal might take its time to pass the verdict.
“On behalf of the prosecution, I can only say we have done our job with great sincerity. We were able to prove the allegations beyond any reasonable doubt and the accused can get maximum punishment for his misdeeds. We completed our job on April 17.
