Bangladesh National Museum takes on a digital look with the introduction of new galleries, multimedia displays, digitalised archives and modernised security system.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith inaugurated the Tk 868.40 lakh project yesterday, as part of the government’s plan to preserve the nation’s centuries-old history and raditions.
The museum now boasts brand new galleries, with displays on the struggles leading up to 1971, the Liberation War and the period from 1971 to 1975.
A total of Tk 336.99 lakh was spent to build and modernise the galleries, buy two LED monitors and four touch screen kiosks. Four documentaries on the Language Movement, historic 7 March speech, Liberation War and Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s life will feature in the new galleries.
Besides, Tk 174.98 lakh was spent on creating a dynamic website and a digital archive that would enable people to identify and find the historic artefacts of the national museum and four other museums.
Meanwhile, the security system of the museum was modernised with the installation of 140 CCTVs, one archway metal detector, burglar/intruder alarms, 160 fire extinguishers and control room and monitoring.
The national museum is instrumental to the protection of national and cultural identities, history and heritage, said speakers at the inauguration ceremony at the auditorium of the museum.
They lauded the new initiative taken by the government and hoped that more such projects are implemented in the future.
The finance minister said, “For a period Bangladesh had focused too much on economic development and fallen behind on certain aspects, such as in archaeology, geology and preservation.”
People are gradually gaining interest in these fields, but there is a long way to go to reach the desirable state, he said.
