The National Board of Revenue has exempted duties on the import of sports-related items for the upcoming ICC World Twenty20, to be held in Bangladesh in March-April next year, in a bid to organise the event successfully, NBR officials said. In a special order issued on Monday, the revenue board said that all types of duties, excluding advance income tax, on the import of such items would be exempted on the condition of fulfilling some criteria, including the submission of invoices, airways bills and other documents.
The NBR made the decision based on an application from the youth and sports ministry.
It also said that the imported items should be used only for arranging the tournament and should not be used for any commercial purposes, and the importer would not be able transfer or sell the imported items.
The youth and sports ministry and the Bangladesh Cricket Board will pay the duties applicable to those items if the products are used for other purposes, or are transferred or lost.
The items include: sporting equipment, medical supplies, instruments, pharmaceuticals, food supplements, beverages, photographic/audio-visual equipment, broadcast equipment, computer and other office equipment, gifts, awards, trophies, medals, flags, decorative/promotional materials, uniforms, costumes and other clothing materials, automobiles and other related items.
