The new wage structure for the garment industry workers will be announced on October 27.
Justice AK Roy, Chairman of the Wage Board for RMG workers told this to reporters on Monday after holding its sixth meeting at the Naya Paltan office
“The board earlier decided that the structure will be finalised and announced on Monday but it could not be possible due to the Eid and the Puja holidays,” Justice Roy said.
Meeting sources said, the minimum wage for garment workers is likely to be Tk 5,000 per month, a 67 per cent rise from the current Tk 3,000. The new wage structure would take effect from the first day of the next month.
The breakthrough came after both the workers’ representative and the garment owners’ representative in the wage board decided for reconciliation so that the new wage structure could be announced at the earliest to avoid further labour unrest.
The labour leaders were bargaining for a minimum salary of Tk 8,114 per month.
The government formed a six-member wage board in June 7 with Justice A.K. Roy as its head. Other members of the board are Dr Md Kamaluddin, Professor of International Business Department, Dhaka University, Kazi Saifuddin Ahmed, Labour Adviser of Bangladesh Employers’ Federation League, Fazlul Haque Montu, Executive President of Jatiya Sramik League, Arshad Jamal Dipu, representative of the RMG owners and Sirajul Isalm Rony, representative of RMG workers.
