Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (BAPEX) is going to start a three- dimensional (3-D) seismic survey soon on five gas fields to determine additional reserves.
Under a project of Asian Development Bank (ADB), the survey will be carried out on 1,250 square kilometers in Titas and Bakhrabad gas fields by Bangladesh Gas Fields Company Limited (BG-FCL) and in Sylhet, Kail-shtila and Rashidpur gas fields by Sylhet Gas Fields Limited (SGFL).
The BGFCL and the SGFL will be the “executing agencies” in their respective fields while the BAPEX, a subsidiary company of state-owned Petrobangla, will be the “implementing agency” for the project.
The 3D survey will help identify gas reservoirs, find location of wells, reduce risk of drilling dry holes, and process and evaluate acquired data.
Besides the five gas fields, the 3D seismic survey on Jalalabad Gas Field is likely to start by next winter, Petrobangla Chairman Md Muqtadir Ali told BSS correspondent M Enamul Haque on Wednesday.
He said the exploration company concerned has already got the government approval for the seismic survey and now it would seek approval for a budget to start the work.
Besides, he said, the government in principal has decided to allow additional 75 square kilometers area for the survey with existing 63 kilometers of the operational area of Jalalabad Gas Field.
Responding to a question, he said uninterrupted gas pressure in a gas field has prompted the authorities concerned to draw conclusion that there might have more gas reserve in the field.
Earlier, the 3D seismic survey was carried out on Bibiana, Moulvibazar, Chha-tak and Feni gas fields.
The country is facing serious problems especially in electricity generation and production in the industrial sector due to the delayed decision, he said adding that we can provide sufficient gas for our clients if we could ensure our additional gas reserves.
