Uncertainty looms over the fate of the next edition of the Bangladesh Premier League as there is no scope to start the tournament before the match-fixing Tribunal completes its proceedings, Bangladesh Cricket Board officials said on Thursday. The Tribunal was formed after the International Cricket Council charged nine individuals in August for match-fixing-related offences during the second edition of the BPL early this year, putting the tournament’s reputation at stake.
‘The Tribunal has been formed and they are going to start their work soon, but unless that is completed it is difficult to host the next edition [of the BPL],’ BCB president Nazmul Hasan said at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.
‘If we want to hold the tournament we must complete those things.
‘We want the BPL to happen, as there is no Twenty20 ahead of the next ICC World Twenty20 [in Bangladesh in March], but everything regarding the last edition of the BPL still needs to be sorted out before we plan for the next tournament,’ he added.
‘If there is no BPL we will try to host a similar Twenty20 competition.’
The match-fixing scandal, along with issues of player non-payment, had tarnished Bangladesh cricket’s reputation around the world.
