The next general election will be held under the present government, Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni reiterated while addressing a United States think tank in Washington on Wednesday. In her speech at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace in Washington DC, she said the present government was committed to the constitutional obligations that it had fought for so long to re-instate and preserve, said a Foreign Ministry press release on Thursday. “There is no room for unconstitutional processes and claimants to undermine Bangladesh’s democratic national order,” said the minister, adding, “Therefore, the next general election will be held by an independent Election Commission under the elected government.” Dipu Moni also focused on the socio-economic and political achievements of Bangladesh and its recurring effects on the peace and security of the entire region. After the speech, she responded to various queries on the audience worker safety, post GSP suspension issues, the arrest of Adilur Rahman and Bangladesh’s unresolved issues with India.
