Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) mayor Selina Hayat Ivy on Monday warned the government not to foment trouble in an attempt to protect Shamim Osman, an Awami League leader and an accused in the Twaki murder case. She also slammed the government for failing to maintain law and order. “We have won the mayoral elections of five city corporations. Don’t create anarchy across the country to save Osman. The consequences will not be good,” she said.
Ivy was speaking at a meeting organised by the Santrash Nirmul Twaki Mancha at the Jatiya Press Club in the city. Tanvir Mohammad Twaki’s father Rafiur Rabbi presided over the programme.
On March 8, the police found 17-year-old Twaki’s body from the bank of the Shitalakkhya river in Narayanganj city two days after he had disappeared. “Everyone knows Twaki’s killer. Only the administration doesn’t. The government is sheltering the perpetrators and trying to protect them,” she alleged.
Ivy demanded immediate arrest of Shamim Osman, his son Ayon Osman and nephew Azmeri Osman for their alleged involvement in Twaki’s murder.
Referring to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Ivy said: “Will you (Prime Minister) listen to the listed terrorists? They flee the country when the party goes through hard times. When the situation gets normal, they return and unleash a reign of terror.”
“I have seen with my own eyes a number of people losing their lives. Osman’s family is responsible for the deteriorating law and order situation in Narayanganj,” she said. Ivy also lambasted the administration for remaining a silent spectator.
Among others, Prof Dr Anisuzzaman, Prof Anu Muhammad, Prof MM Akash, Pankaj Bhattacharyya spoke on the occasion. Anu Muhammad said: “A state becomes a terrorist’s haven when it stands by the murderer. If all institutions, including the government, stand by the killers, then where will people go?”
