National Human Rights Commission chairman Mizanur Rahman said that the NHRC was determined to stop extra judicial killings in the country.
He said that the commission was also determined to stop unnatural death in custody.
He said, ‘Extrajudicial killings are yet to be stopped while unnatural deaths in the custody of law enforcement agencies apparently came down.’
Speaking at a day long citizens’ conference he said that the NHRC was working to bring down the number of extrajudicial killings to zero.
‘We are working to bring the number of extrajudicial killing to level zero,’ he also said.
Mizanur said that the government lacks transparency, accountability and the commitment to citizens’ participation which were essential for democracy in any country.
Stressing on participatory democracy and accountability in governance, the session was jointly hosted by Wave Foundation, Governance Coalition and Lok Morcha at the LGEd Auditorium.
Chaired by Governance Advocacy Forum and Palli Karma Sahayak Foundation chairman Qazi Khaliquzzaman , the session was addressed by professor of economics, University of Dhaka, MM Akash, Tofayel Ahmed local government adviser of UN Development Programme, Mohsin Ali executive director of Wave Foundation, Magura Zilla Lok Morcha president M Habibul Hasan and former Supreme Court judge, justice Mohammed Gholam Rabbani.
Rabbani said that there is no true parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh though there is a parliament.
MM Akash said that government was bound to fail unless the ruling party changes itself.
He asked the government to create an effective local government commission to make local government effective in the interest of accountable, transparent and participatory democracy in the country.
Qazi Kholiquzzaman said that without economic emancipation of the common people they could have no human rights.
He also said that market economy does not favor economic emancipation of the common citizens.
