The communication between the south-western region of the country and the capital is being hampered seriously as disruption of ferry services has become almost a daily affair in recent days.
Fog-hit ferry services on major Paturia-Daulatdia route again remained suspended for twelve hours and resumed at 10:00am today (Wednesday).
The suspension of ferries caused long traffic chaos on both sides of the ferry routes and also untold inconveniences of passengers of stranded vehicles amid chilling night cold, officer in charge of Daulotdia ghat police out post Md. Wahiduzzaman said.
Biddut Kumar Shaha, Manager (Com.) of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC) at Aricha sector, said the ferry services were disrupted as the channel became risky from mid-night to next morning, causing sufferings to the passengers of different vehicles.
The ferries named Bir Shrestha Hamidur Rahman, Karamot Ali, Khan Jahan Ali, Shah Ali and Kumari with hundreds of trucks, buses and small vehicles along with passengers on board forced to strand at Paturia ghat, while Bir Shrestha Motiur Rahman, Bir Shrestha Zahangir, Shah Jalal, Shah Paran and Amanot Shah passed the lazy time at Daulatdia ghat, because of near zero visibility.
Over 800 vehicles, including coaches, buses, minibuses, privet cars and trucks, lined up at Paturia in Manikganj and similar number of vehicles at Daulatdia in Rajbari district.
Before the resumption of ferry service Wednesday morning, a four kilometres long queue of vehicles was seen on the road to Paturia Ghat, officer-in-charge of Shebalaya PS under which Paturia is located, told The Independent.
The ferry services resumed at about 10.00 am Wednesday after the area was cleared of fog, Md Ashrafulla Khan, Manager (Com.) of BIWTC at Aricha sector said.
