At least nine people, including a mother and her son, three more women, 2 drivers and 2 teachers, were killed and more than 40 injured in a head-on collision between a passenger bus and a truck on Sylhet-Tamabil highway at Jaintapur on Monday.
Among the victims, four died on the spot while five others died on way to the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital, sources in the police said.
The deceased were identified as Salma Begum, 50, of village Darbast and her 11-year-old son Noman Ahmed, a class four student, Khatun Begum, 45, of village Daudik, bus driver Anwar Hosain, 28, resident of village Dupigram of Jaintapur upazila and Goainghat Kurihail Government Primary School teacher Tripti Rani Dey, 30, and Jaintapur Birakhai Government Primary School teacher Babita Rani, 24.
Identity of two elderly women and the truck driver could not be known immediately, sources in the highway police said.
Of the injured, 20 were admitted to the Sylhet Osmani Medical College Hospital and some twenty, including a physician of the Jaintapur upazila health complex, were admitted to the health complex, local sources said.
Witnesses and police said the accident took place near Sarighat in Jaintapur upazila in the district at around 1pm when a Jaflong-bound truck hit the passenger loaded bus from opposite direction on the Sylhet-Tamabil highway.
