In the metropolitan areas of Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Sylhet and Barisal, the Election Commission has imposed restriction on movement of taxicabs, microbuses, jeeps and pick-up vans from midnight today until December 29 midnight.
Other vehicles including private cars will be allowed to ply.
ACROSS THE COUNTRY
There will be a ban on movement of auto-rickshaws, taxicabs, jeeps, pick-up vans, cars, buses, trucks, tempos, launches, speedboats and all types of motorised boats.
The ban, however, will not be effective on movement of vehicles on highways.
STRICT RESTRICTION ON MOTORBIKES
A ban on movement of motorbikes in all parts including the metropolitan areas across the country came into effect from last midnight and will remain in force until December 31 midnight.
EXEMPTION
The ban will not be applicable to movement of vehicles transporting election observers and journalists, both international and domestic, having identity cards, vehicles carrying law enforcers, ambulances, and vehicles used for providing utility services including electricity, gas, postal and telecommunications services.
The ban can also be relaxed for vehicles used by candidates and their election agents, albeit with permission from returning officers.
Besides, the ban can be relaxed in ports and also in case of emergency.
The ban will not be applicable to movement of boats in haor and reverine areas.
RESTRICTION ON MEDIA
In a press release, the EC Secretariat said the media including private satellite television channels could not broadcast any election-related programmes including talk shows and discussion from last midnight. The release however did not specify how long the restriction would remain in force.
