The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president, AJ Mohammad Ali, on Wednesday described as baseless media reports, suggesting that there was consensus on not holding political rallies on the Supreme Court premises by lawyers with political affiliation.
He also said that lawyers would continue their movement until the “March for Democracy” achieves its desired result. “We held a meeting with the Chief Justice in response to his invitation. But no decision was taken on not holding political rallies on the Supreme Court premises,” the SCBA president claimed on Wednesday.
He said some lawyers, including Attorney General Mahbubey Alam, former attorney general AF Hasan Ariff, former presidents of the SCBA Abdul Baset Majumder, Habibul Islam Bhuiyan and AFM Mesbahuddin on Tuesday held a meeting with the Chief Justice following his invitation to find a way to resolve the crisis in the apex court.
“As the president of the SCBA, I expressed concern over the Chief Justice’s failure to take steps against outsiders, who attacked lawyers after opening the main gate of the apex court,” he said.
He claimed that the Chief Justice did not invite anyone at the meeting to discuss political matters. No political decision was taken at the meeting.
“It was decided that those who attended the meeting with the Chief Justice would not disclose the contents. But Attorney General Mahbuey Alam, who is also familiar as a pro-AL lawyer, made a confusing statement over our peaceful movement against the government,” Ali alleged.
The lawyers were taking part in a peaceful movement and it would continue till it succeeds, the SCBA president, said.
Soon after the press briefing, pro-BNP lawyers brought out a procession on the Supreme Court premises, which paraded through several parts of the apex court.
