The government would not make any further proposal to the BNP to hold talks on the caretaker government issue to end the current political standoff, said Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif on Sunday. “No further offer will be given to the BNP to sit for talks on the issue of election-time government. If they (BNP) want to discuss the matter, they will have to place a proposal in Parliament,” he added.
Hanif, also a special assistant to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, told this to reporters after placing a wreath on the portrait of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhanmondi in the city, marking the 64th anniversary of the Bangladesh Awami League.
Replying to a query, the AL leader said, “We’re on the right track. So, we’ve no intention to offer a proposal for talks on the next election-time government to the BNP.”
Hanif said the Awami League-led government is relentlessly working to establish people’s right to vote that has been already proved through various local government elections. “We’ve already proved that free and fair elections are possible under the current government. So, we’ve no need for another election-time administration to supervise the next general elections,” he added.
“If they (BNP) have any confusion or doubt over the next election-time government, they should give a proposal first. But the issue must be discussed in Parliament,” he observed.
He alleged that the BNP believes in hatching conspiracies and not holding dialogue, which was proved when it withdrew its adjournment motion on the caretaker government system from Parliament.
The Awami League leader said the nation wants to know why the BNP had withdrawn its adjournment motion from Parliament.
Referring to the alleged disappearance of Jahangir Alam, a rebel mayoral candidate of the Gagipur City Corporation election, Hanif said the BNP has been telling lies about the incident. “Jahangir Alam is not missing, but sick. He is currently admitted to Apollo Hospital. The BNP is spreading rumours over the issue,” he added.
