On Tuesday, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority said that starting on September 15, no registration number will be assigned to any motorcycle if the driver lacked a valid driving license.
The order, issued by the authority, was given to inform people about it, said the BRTA director (engineering) Sitangshu Shekhar Biwas.
Currently, the BRTA registers motorcycles when they are purchased.
Driving motorbikes also requires a separate driving license, which is also provided by the BRTA.
The decision stated that starting on September 15, the registering authority would be required to ensure the issue of driving licenses when providing registration for motorbikes.
According to the statement, the decision was made following a meeting on June 14.
In order to prevent traffic accidents during Eid-ul-Azha, the government decided on Sunday to ban motorbikes on all national highways and interdistrict roads from July 7–13.
A meeting held by the road transport ministry’s Road Transport and Highways Division also agreed that motorbikes registered in one area would not be permitted to go to other districts at the same time.
The meeting resolved that motorcycle riders can go to neighboring districts with the police’s authorization under reasonable and unavoidable circumstances.
Additionally, it opted against allowing motorcycle ride-sharing businesses outside of the approved zones.
