No new commercial house in Dhanmondi

The government will no longer allow construction of any building for commercial use in residential areas including Dhanmondi.
The acting housing and public works secretary Khandaker Shawkat Hossain also said that there will also be changes to Industrial and commercial zones within Tejgaon.
Hossain told news agecy that the proposal was now being finalised following several meetings.
Housing ministry officials, with knowledge of the situation, said through a circular issued on May 11, 2000, construction of some non-residential buildings or installations are being allowed in Dhanmondi residential area on payment of a fixed fee.
The officials also said that the circular allowed approval to be given for plots on both sides of Dhanmondi – including Old Road No 27, current Road no 2, Satmasjid Road, Mirpur Road and Green Road – for 12 specific commercial purposes without making them into commercial area
But many plot owners of the areas are applying to the ministry for permission to construct commercial buildings or establishments, the officials said.
When asked about the current trend, acting secretary Hossain said, “Construction of buildings for commercial purposes will no longer be approved in the residential areas including Dhanmondi.”
Shawkat said the reserved ‘sweeper passage’ in Dhanmondi area is being removed and will be allotted among the local plot owners as open space.
But construction of buildings will not be allowed here, he added.
Regarding industrial and commercial plot management at Tejgaon industrial zone, he said Tejgaon area is now a mixed area of residential blocks alongside industrial and commercial plots.
In some cases, commercial and residential plot owners are applying for those plots to be listed as industrial plots, he said.
But it will not be possible to keep a mixed zone in the area, he said and added that the area will be brought under a package either as an industrial or commercial zone.
