After a night of drama and rumours, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Tuesday announced a 15-member squad for the upcoming World Cup in India, to be led by Shakib Al Hasan, excluding opener Tamim Iqbal.
While Tamim has been left out, another veteran Mahmudullah Riyad has been included for the event.
The opener, who had returned to the squad of the New Zealand series after missing the Asia Cup 2023 due to a back injury, complained after the second ODI against the Blackcaps on Saturday that he felt discomfort during batting.
Following that, it was reportedly revealed that the batsman had told the selection panel that he might not be fit for all the games at the World Cup, which eventually led to him not being picked for the tournament.
In Tamim’s absence, BCB has chosen Tanzid Hasan Tamim as the partner for Liton Das in the opening slot.
Mahmudullah, who returned to the Bangladesh squad in the New Zealand series following a six-month hiatus, was picked in the squad after he scored 49 and 21 in the two matches against the Blackcaps.
The Bangladesh team will leave for India ahead of the tournament tomorrow.
