Noted nuclear scientist and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s husband Dr M A Wajed Mia passed away at the city’s Square Hospital yesterday afternoon at the age of 67 following protracted illness, hospital officials said.
“He passed away at 4.25 pm on Saturday,” Square Hospital director Dr Sanwar Hossain announced as a huge number of people crowded the hospital when his condition started deteriorating since 2.30 pm.
Sheikh Hasina was present at the hospital when Mia breathed his last.
Besides his wife, Dr M A Wajed Mia left his son Sajib Wajed Joy and daughter Saima Wajed Putul, grand sons and daughters, and a large number of relatives, admirers and wellwishers to mourn his death.
Dr Hossain said a group of specialist doctors put in their last efforts as his condition was deteriorating but their efforts eventually proved futile.
A former chairman of the country’s Atomic Energy Commission, Mian was under constant medical surveillance after he suffered a heart attack three days ago as was being treated for multiple complications at the facility.
Doctors earlier said Mia was not “out of danger” though his condition slightly improved over the past two days but not to the level that could allow him to be shifted abroad for better treatment.
He was being treated for months at the hospital for diabetic, blood pressure, kidney and cardiac ailments while his deteriorating health condition earlier forced Sheikh Hasina to scrap her planned visit to the United States, Britain and Canada.
A large number of mourning visitors including politicians, relatives and admirers crowded the hospital as soon as they heard the news about Mia’s death. Later, the body was shifted to his Sudha Sadan residence at Dhanmondi residential area for burial preparations.
Prime Minister’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad told reporters that his body would be laid to eternal rest beside the graves of his parents at his village home in Pirganj Upazila of Rangpur district.
He said Mia’s first Namaj-e-Janaza would be held today (Sunday) at 10 am at Baitul Mokarram National Mosque and later the body would be flown to his village home for burial.
