In order to reduce traffic fatalities by a quarter by 2024 and by half by 2030, the National Road Safety Council (NRSC) approved the National Road Safety Strategic Action Plan (2020-24).
At its 29th meeting held yesterday in the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority auditorium, the apex government body dealing with road safety issues also voted to reject a proposal to ban motorcycles on highways.
“We are giving priority on controlling bikes than imposing ban,” said Minister of Road Transport and Bridges Obaidul Quader Obaidul Quader, who presided over the meeting.
He promised that regulations for bicycles and three-wheelers would be developed in the future.
At 11:25 a.m., the NRSC started the meeting.
A number of other council members were present as well.
For the first time in 21 months, the NRSC is holding a meeting.
