An oil-laden lighterage vessel caught fire at Anu Majhirghat area on Karnaphuli River in the port city on Wednesday evening. Two units of fire fighters and a team of Bangladesh Navy rushed to the spot and controlled the fire. No casualty, however, was reported in the fire. Sources said, the lighterage vessel named Suchana used to carry oil for the Mother Vessel (MV) at the outer anchorage which caught fire at around 5:00 pm while berthed at Anu Majhir Ghat area.
Locals and witnesses said, there was Furnace Oil (FO) in the tanks of the vessel. On information, two units of fire fighters and a team of BN rushed to the spot and doused the fire at around 7:00 pm after two hours of frantic effort.
Deputy Assistant Director of Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defense Jashim Uddin said, as there was FO in the tanks of the vessel it was very difficult to control the blaze. “However, we managed to control the fire at around 7 pm without any casualty”, he said adding that the origin of fire could not be identified yet.
“An investigation team would work on revealing the reason and cost of damage in the fire”, Jashim Uddin also said.
