District Jatiyatabadi Matsyajibi Dal president Aman Ullah Aman was killed and 15 people were injured in a clash between two factions of BNP during a workers’ meeting in the town on Friday. Locals said the workers’ meeting of the district unit BNP began at Shilpakala Academy around 10am where BNP international affairs secretary Nazim Uddin Alam attended as the chief guest.
However, two factions of the main opposition — one led by district BNP president Habibul Islam and the other by its general secretary Syed Iftekhar Ali — engaged in an altercation around 11 am over taking seat on the podium, conducting the meeting and delivering speech. At one stage, the both groups equipped with lethal weapons locked into the clash in the presence of some BNP central leaders, including Nazim. A chase and counter chase took place during the melee when the entire area turned into a battlefield that left 16 people injured from the both sides.
The injured were rushed to Satkhira Sadar Hospital from where Aman was shifted to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) following deterioration of his condition. Aman, also former vice-president of Satkhira Govt College Chhatra Sangsad, succumbed to his injuries at the KMCH around 4pm. The meeting was foiled following the clash.
