Tens of thousands of online users blasted the government and posted various reactions immediately after the verdict against top war criminal Ghulam Azam was delivered on Monday. They accused the ruling Awami League-led grand alliance of striking a “secret deal” with the Jamaat-e-Islami, most of whose top leaders have been detained and are facing trial for crimes against humanityduring the 1971 Liberation War.
Some online users even made a pledge not to vote for the AL in the next general election, accusing it of betraying the spirit of the Liberation War. Shuvo Kamal, a popular online activist, in his Facebook status, wrote: “Long live Awami League-Jamaat alliance.”
Expressing discontent and dismay, another young online activist Minhaz Uddin Miran, also the coordinator of Amjonota, a popular Facebook-based charity group, wrote: “It is Awami League and Jamaat Bangla’s victory!”
Expressing wonder, Dipan Nandy, a young journalist, reacted online: “Oh, my parents and my teachers were wrong. Gulam Azam was not a ring leader of the collaborators!”
Dima Nefertiti, a social worker and communication expert, said: “I am utterly shocked. The nation was not waiting to hear this type of verdict for 42 years.”
